The Land I Save for Myself
2023, yarn, Chinese wood furniture
In this piece, I have incorporated traditional Chinese wood furniture, which was once a staple in households across the country. Although these furniture are no longer as prevalent in modern-day China, they hold immense cultural and sentimental value. Memories of families sitting together, chatting, and working are woven into the fibers of these once-functional objects.
When these furniture pieces are not in use, they become symbols of time passing and the fleeting nature of human existence. In this way, they are not merely objects, but containers of memories and emotions. Looking at these stools, I can almost see my own family and ancestors sitting on them, connecting me to a rich lineage of tradition and culture.
Using knitting as a medium, I aim to create a visual representation of the lost and abandoned nature of these treasured objects. The intricate cobwebs that envelope the furniture are not meant to evoke feelings of disgust or horror, but rather to add to the sense of nostalgia and longing for a time gone by. It has warm color and it is light and soft. Because these furniture are precious for me. They are carrying those things I do not want lost. I am using my own way to save them, to have the chance to let them be seen, or at least for keeping my personal memory.
